‘Dean’ pega a apicultores; temen crisis en península - El Universal - Los Estados

Beekeepers in peril in Mexico--the perfect storm as far as Undismayed is concerned!

‘Dean’ pega a apicultores; temen crisis en península - El Universal - Los Estados

Our Mexican source (the indomitable Burro Hall) has passed on this news that beekeepers in the Yucatan (10,000 strong with 450,000 hives) have been devastated by Hurricane Dean. The Mexican government is rushing aid to the region but that is unlikely to actually solve the problem.

Of course the American media is ignoring the story. And the Chinese honey producers are muy feliz.

Now they may have to go back to the Mayan stingless bee, the only honeyproducer in the hemisphere before the introduction of European honeybees.

What to do? How the hell should I know? I'm a blogger, I have ideas, not answers.

One thing might be to check if you can earmark funds from Heifer international to send hives to the Yucatan. Only $30 buys a hive and bees, which is half to a third what it costs in the states. I will investigate other options. I will also forward this information to beekeeping organizations in the US, since they likely do not have a personal beerelated clipping service in Mexico. Thanks, Burro Hall!
