It is an unbeatable storyline when conservative gay-bashing rightwingers are exposed as gays themselves, and I really think Craig's defense ("not only am I not gay, I have never been gay") is hilarious.
What I don't get is why these closested gay Republicans all turn out to be such fucking deviants.
None of them run out to be the run-of-mill closeted types. They are all scumbags.
Shouldn't the story really be not that they turn out to be gay, since that is a legal and essentially uninteresting concept and not deviant, but that they are sleazy creeps who engage in weird criminal behavior of the most deviant variety that has nothing to do inherently with being gay.
The story emphasis then should be that the only reason these politicos constantly complained of the deviancy of homosexuality is not because they are gay, but because they are themselves are fucking deviants trolling the outward edge of acceptable behavior.
Lock up these dangerous predators! Put them on the sexual offender registry!
This is not the same as, say, the Monkey Business or Newt Gingrich having an affair with one of his staffers while his wife slowly died of cancer in a far away hospital. Those famous cases are just old fashioned infidelity, bor-ring If Craig or any of the other Repbulican deviant crew had just been having an affair with a dude, it would be far less explosive.
But the ones who get caught are all doing truly disgusting stuff that any sane person, gay or straight, should condemn and abhore: seeking sex in public bathrooms in the case of Craig, nailing little boys in the case of Mark Foley, or meth smoking while screwing meth-dealing male prostitutes in the case of Christ-er Haggard (and there are several more cases of bathrooms and little boys detailed in this vaguely annoying New Republic piece)
It does seem like the media allows this emphasis to slide.
