FORT PIERCE, Fla. (AP) - A Fort Pierce man is charged with raising birds for cockfighting, which led to 846 of the animals being euthanized.

St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara says 42-year-old Juan Mondragon was arrested Sunday. He's charged with 846 counts of possession of fighting roosters.

Mascara says Mondragon was first arrested April 8 on charges of fighting and baiting animals. He was 1 of 37 people arrested Sunday at a cockfight in Okeechobee County. No fights were being held at either of the locations in yesterday's raids. But authorities say those roosters were being sold for fighting in Okeechobee County

A humane society spokesman says the animals couldn't be used for food because they had been pumped full of steroids and other chemicals.
