Those arrested were charged with misdemeanors and released. They face up to one year in jail and a $5,000 fine. About five of those arrested are members of the U.S. military, Dumanis said. An additional 50 people were being sought.

Although cockfighting is illegal throughout the United States, the penalty for possessing fighting roosters varies by state. Owning a cockfighting bird is legal in 16 states. California is one of seven states in which owning a rooster for fighting is a misdemeanor. The charge is a felony in 27 states.
