The NarcoSphere || Tabasco 2007: Will It be New Orleans in 2005, or Mexico City in 1985?: "Which begs the question: Once the waters have subsided, the dead have been counted, and the nearly one million refugees return to what remains of their homes, will what emerges resemble New Orleans today, or Mexico on January 1st, 1994? And will solidarity turn to rage and political organization, as it did in 1985?"
Though I am not clear on what New Orleans today is? A reviving murder capital? Are there actually lessons of New Orleans other than incompetence and corruption? That the whole country can watch the destruction of the city and then essentially forget about the problem?
Or that in the wake of disaster thousands of Mexican immigrants come to town to rebuild it?

In 2005 a friend working on relief efforts in New Orleans predicted that in the days to come we would see the birth of a social movement that would transform the domestic priorities of the U.S. His exact words were: "Think Mexico City, 1985" in clear allusion to the revolution that emerged from the rubble of that city after the devastating earthquake. Not withstanding a number of brave and determined citizens's groups that have stood up and are fighting tirelessly for the rights of the displaced and to preserve New Orleans' cultural identity, the social movement in NOLA my friend predicted failed to truly materialize.
