Bloomberg.com: Latin America: "Jan. 3 (Bloomberg) -- One of Mexico's most wanted drug traffickers is funding protests against military operations in northwest Mexico where his illegal operations flourish, El Universal said.
Joaquin ``El Chapo'' Guzman, who runs drug operations in Sinaloa, paid thousands of protesters as much as 2,000 pesos ($183.28) daily to march against a government policy to use soldiers to fight organized crime in October and November, the Mexico City-based newspaper reported, citing a military source it didn't identify.
President Felipe Calderon sent troops to Sinaloa a year ago as part of Operation Sierra Madre to combat drug trafficking, the newspaper said. Soldiers found a Ford Lobo pickup truck with explosives similar to those used by guerrillas who attacked state-owned oil pipelines in July and September, the newspaper reported.
Guzman has been a fugitive since escaping in 2001 from a federal prison in Mexico."
