Another great resource now out from the Library of Congress, this one a searchable database of newspapers from selected states from 1897-1910.

Those happen to be especially fascinating news, at least to those of us at Undismayed (i..e me). It doesn't hurt that they have all manner of newspapers from Kentucky and Virginia, among other states.

There are some commercial versions of similar technologies, but they are hideously expensive and ponderous to use, I have found.

Like many things from the turn of the last century there are some real marvels here in all forms. Even before you search, check out these great newspaper names:

The Bee (Earlington, KY) --this was actually a fairly common name around the country
Blue-grass blade (Lexington, KY)
The Bourbon News (Paris, KY)
The Hatchet (Washington, DC)

and, my favorite,

The Richmond Climax (Richmond, KY)
